DOL Investigation #9
Homework

Bestiary of Bugs for Note Packet

Quizlet Flash Cards & Games for DOL9

Essential Questions >
How can we investigate a cockroach’s adaptations as they relate to
habitat preferences?
  • What are insects and how are they adapted for survival?
  • What are the structural and behavioral adaptations of a hissing cockroach?
  • How can we infer the habitat of a hissing cockroach based on lab investigation results?
You will KNOW that….
Key terms such as:
  • Insects, metamorphosis, molting, adaptations, head, thorax, abdomen, exoskeleton, spiracles, Arthropods
  • How to create a formal lab report
It’s important to understand that…

  1. That insects are highly adapted and belong to a group of invertebrates called arthropods
  2. Insects have three body parts, six legs, antenna and an exoskeleton.
  3. Cockroach behaviors can be tested and explained through scientific investigations.

You will be able to….

  1. Demonstrate respect for handling organisms.

  2. Explain how hissing cockroaches structural and behavioral adaptations help them survive.

  3. Make inferences about the hissing cockroaches natural habitat based on experimental observations.

4. Communicate results of a cockroach investigation through a formal lab report.

LESSON #1

EQ: What are insects and how are they adapted for survival? (DOL Lab Notebook pages 56 & 57)

Insect Adaptations

  • You will use visual aids of insect structures to make observations and inferences about insect adaptations.

  • An ADAPTATION is a structure or behavior of an organism that helps it survive and reproduce in its environment.

LESSON #3

EQ: How do we prepare an investigative plan?

Preparing for your Cockroach Investigation Plan

1.) As a table group, use lab book pages 62 and 63 to help you plan and carry out your investigation.

2.) Use page 59 for ideas about a "Testable Question" that you can use to base your investigation on (Investigative Question). View the material at the links below to learn how to properly create a testable question.

How to create a "testable" question

The difference between an Independent Variable (I.V.) and a Dependent Variable (D.V.)

Graph of Independent Variable vs Dependent Variable

TESTABLE QUESTION FRAMES

Does changing _(I.V.) _ affect (D.V.) _?

How does changing _(I.V.) _ affect (D.V.) _?

If we change _(I.V.) _ will it affect (D.V.) _?

(I.V.)= Independent Variable (What you change)
(D.V.__)= Dependent Variable (What may happen from the change)

3.) Once you have a "Testable" investigative question, enter it on the entry form below.

Investigative Question Entry Form

Once Mr. Rem highlights it in green, your are OK to enter the question on page 62 of your lab book. If the question is highlighted in yellow, see Mr. Rem for clarification. Check the link below to see the highlight color of your question. Note that the first entry (Highlighted in blue) is an example of a good entry.

4.) Next, view this link to learn how to create your "IF - THEN" hypothesis.

How to write an IF -THEN hypothesis

Enter your If-Then hypothesis and other required material on the form below.

Hypothesis & Materials Entry Form

If the hypothesis is highlighted in green, you may enter it on page 62 of your lab book. If the hypothesis is highlighted in yellow, see Mr. Rem for clarification. Check the link below to see the highlight color of your Hypothesis. Note that the first entry (Highlighted in blue) is an example of a good entry.

5.) Fill out the rest of your investigative plan on the form below.

Investigative Plan Entry Form

If your entry is highlighted in green, you may continue to enter it on to lab book pages 62 & 63.

Don't forget to create a Data Table and Illustration on page 63 (Part 1) of your lab book.

If your entry is highlighted in yellow, see Mr. Rem for clarification. Check the link below to see the highlight color of your entry. Note that the first entry (Highlighted in blue) is an example of a good entry.
