This video gives a behind the scenes view of the food chain for humans. Although we are rarely "Hunter/Gatherers" like most organisms in nature, this video shows the amazing way that we have adapted to consume energy from trophic levels below us. Trace the trophic levels of a delivered pizza from it's raw ingredients to the pizza that is delivered to our door. Marvel at the energy and effort that is put in to that delivered pizza as it goes from farm to table.

Here are some questions to think about while viewing this video segment:
1.) In what state do most of the ingredients for a pizza originate?
2.) List all the producers that you would be used to make a typical pizza.
3.) Name a consumer that may be used to make a typical pizza.
4.) What are some things that are good about the mass production of food to feed us?
5.) What are some things that are bad about the mass production of food to feed us?
6.) Which method do you think, consumes more energy? Hunter/gatherer or mass production of food? Why?

Trophic levels, autotrophs, heterotrophs, omnivores, detrivores, detritus, energy pyramids, herbivore, carnivore, biomass.

It’s important to understand that…
1. Photosynthesis converts energy from the sun to energy rich molecules, which drives the energy flow of food (biomass) through an ecosystem.
2. Energy moves up through trophic levels.
>90% of available energy is lost during the transition from one trophic level to another.
>10% of available energy is transferred to the next higher trophic level.

Students will be able to….
1. Quantify potential energy from a biomass food source.
2. Model energy flow from one trophic level to the next while applying the 10% rule.
3. Show what raw materials are needed for photosynthesis to occur via scientific investigation modeled experiment.
