Students will know ….
TERMS:
Adaptation, Structural adaptations, Behavioral adaptations, Physiological Adaptation, Feature, Trait, Variation

It’s important to understand that…

1. Adaptations help organisms survive and reproduce in an environment.
2. A feature is a structure, characteristic, or behavior of an organism such as eye color, fur pattern, timing of migration.
3. A trait is a way in which a feature is expressed. (i.e. eye color can be brown or blue)
4. Variation is the range of expression of a feature within a population such as varied eye color among individuals.
5. Populations can change over time through adaptations.

Students will be able to….
1. Use multimedia simulations to investigate the adaptive value of protective coloration and apply concepts of adaptations, features, traits and variations.
2. Conduct computer simulated predator / prey interactions over multiple generations to investigate the effect of protective coloration on the color characteristics of a population of walking sticks.

LESSON 1

EQ: What are adaptations and how can we identify them in organisms?

Lab Book: Pages 49
FOSS Text: Pages 42-45

1.) What are adaptations? View this ADAPTATIONS video to find out? Be able to identify and give examples of the 3 types of adaptations shown in this video.

2.) What are the types of adaptations? Copy these definitions into lab book pages 8 & 9.

  • Structural - A body structure that helps and organisms survive and reproduce in an environment. Example: wings to fly

  • Behavioral - A behavior that helps and organisms survive and reproduce in an environment. Example: hibernation

  • Physiological - An internal body action that helps and organisms survive and reproduce in an environment. Example: venom production in snakes

3.) Complete lab book page 49 while watching the video "Strangers In Paradise". See if you can identify the adaptations in the video as Structural, Behavioral, or Physiological.

LESSON 2

EQ: How does variation in a trait lead to population adaptations?

Lab Book: Pages 51-53
FOSS Text: Pages 42-45

1.) Complete lab book activity (Walkingstick Predation: Bush Environment) pg. 51
Walking Sticks "Eat Insects"

Walking Sticks for Ipads

2.) Show me your completed page 51.

3.) Complete lab book activity (Five Generations of Walkingsticks) pgs. 52 & 53

How to prepare for the exam.....

1.) Quizlet Pop & Eco 8

2.)Feature, Trait or Variation?
  • A FEATURE is a characteristic that ALL organisms in a species have. Example: All humans have thumbs.
  • A TRAIT is a characteristic within a feature that SOME organisms in a species have. Example: Some humans have double jointed thumbs.
  • A VARIATION is the range of all the different traits within a feature that organisms in a species have. Example: Humans have long, thin, and wide thumbs
How well do you know features, traits, and variations?
  1. A hawk has wings. --> Feature, Trait or Variation?
  2. Some hawks have wings with short feathers. --> Feature, Trait or Variation?
  3. Some humans are very short. --> Feature, Trait or Variation?
  4. Humans have height. --> Feature, Trait or Variation?
  5. Humans can have eye colors of green, brown, hazel, and blue. --> Feature, Trait or Variation?
  6. Some clover has four leaves. --> Feature, Trait or Variation?
  7. Clover has leaves. --> Feature, Trait or Variation?
  8. Clover may have one, two, three, or four leaves. --> Feature, Trait or Variation?
